Finland is making a strategic leap in the global semiconductor industry with the release of its comprehensive strategy, “Chips from the North.” This ambitious blueprint outlines Finland’s vision to become a significant player in the semiconductor sector by 2035, leveraging its competitive advantages and fostering industry-academia-public collaboration.
The white paper detailing this strategy is now available for review and can serve as a guide for stakeholders and investors interested in the Finnish semiconductor ecosystem. It highlights Finland’s growth opportunities, including system chip design, sensors and MEMS, process and material technologies, photonics, and quantum technologies. The strategy emphasizes the importance of semiconductors in achieving societal goals related to the environment, artificial intelligence, and automation, recognizing the sector’s significance to the economy and national security.
The “Chips from the North” strategy is an industry-led effort, developed through surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions involving over 200 industry experts. It sets clear actions to accelerate growth, including a joint R&D funding of €5 billion over ten years, the establishment of new R&D and design centers, and over €1 billion in manufacturing site investments. As countries worldwide recognize the critical role of semiconductors, Finland’s strategy positions it as a key contributor to Europe’s technological competitiveness.
